Ethel Merman [뮤지컬]

뉴욕 출생. 컬럼비아대학교 재학 중 작사가(作詞家) L.하트와 알게 되고 1919년부터 그와 콤비가 되어 1930년대의 뮤지컬 걸작을 많이 작곡하였다. 1943년 하트가 죽자 O.해머스타인 2세와 다시 콤비가 되어 《오클라호마》(1943) 《남태평양》(1949) 《왕과 나》(1951) 《사운드 오브 뮤직》(1959) 《회전목마》 등의 걸작을 작곡하여 발표하고, 1960년 해머스타인 2세 사후에는 혼자서 작사 ·작곡한 《노 스트링스》(1962)를 발표하여 세계적인 명성을 얻었다. 그의 작품은 선율의 아름다움으로 널리 알려졌으며, 가곡 ·영화음악 ·발레 등의 작곡도 많다. 《오클라호마》와 《남태평양》으로 퓰리처상(賞)을 받았고, 영화 《스테이트 페어》로 아카데미 주제가상을 받았다. .... ....
