INTRODUCTION톰 웨이트는 1973년 《어사일럼 레코드》(Asylum Records)사의 음반으로 데뷔하였다. 1930년대부터 1950년대까지 블루스나 재즈등을 기초로 한 악곡과 특유의 쉰 가성과 특기인 피아노에 의한 ‘음유시인’이미지로 많은 인기를 모았다. 1980년대 이후로는 독창성을 더욱 가미해 루트 음악에 기인하면서도 전위적인 사운드 때문에 화제가 되었다.
배우로서도 활동해 프란시스 포드 코폴라, 짐 자무쉬 등이 감독을 맡은 영화에 많이 출연했다. 대표적인 곡은 〈Downtown Train〉과 〈"Ol' '55"〉이다. 1999년에는 펑크 락으로 유명한 라벨 《Epitaph》와 계약해 화제가 되기도 하였다. 뮤지션 사이에서도 높은 인기를 모아 이글스, 라드 스튜어트, 브루스 스프링스틴, 라몬즈 등의 뮤지션이 그의 음악을 리메이크하였다. 특히 롤링 스톤스의 키스 리처드와 교류가 깊어서 롤링 스톤스의 앨범 《Dirty Work》의 코러스로도 참여 함은 물론이고 키스 리처드 또한 톰 웨이트의 앨범 《Rain Dog》에서 많은 곡의 기타 연주를 해주었다. ....  ....
