메가데스(Megadeth)는 멤버이자 대표, 그리고 작곡, 작사가인 데이브 머스테인이 이끄는 스래시 메탈 밴드이다. 데이브 머스테인의 메탈리카 탈퇴를 계기로 결성한 후 지금까지 총합 10장의 스튜디오 음반과 3장의 EP반, 그리고 2장의 라이브 음반을 내었다.
1980년대에는 스래시 메탈의 선구자들 중 하나로써, 메가데스는 국제적인 명성을 잡아가고 있었으나, 리더 데이브 머스테인의 심각한 약물 남용, 잦은 멤버 교체 등으로 여러 문제를 겪게 된다. 그 뒤 머스테인의 절제와 함께 안정된 구성원을 갖춘 다음, 밴드는 1992년에 그래미상을 탄 멀티-플래티넘 음반인 《Countdown to Extinction》을 포함한 연속적인 플래티넘, 골드를 기록한 음반들을 발매했다. 2002년, 리더 데이브 머스테인의 왼팔의 신경이 마비되어 밴드는 해체한다. 그러나 그가 장기간의 물리치료를 받은 후 2004년 새로운 멤버들과 밴드를 재조직하고 빌보드 차트 18위에 오른 《The System Has Failed》를 발매한다.
메가데스는 두 명의 기타리스트들이(현재 데이브 머스테인, 글렌 드로버)번갈아가며 연주하는 복잡하고 변천적인 기타 연주스타일로 잘 알려져 있으며 기타겸 보컬인 데이브 머스테인의 특유의 찢어지는 듯한 목소리도 많이 알려져 있다. 가사는 자주 전쟁, 정치, 마약을 다루며 최근에는 인간관계에 관한 것도 다루는 것으로 보인다. 21년의 활동시기 동안 밴드의 멤버들은 데이브 머스테인의 '독점'으로 인한 상당히 잦은 교체를 겪었다.
메가데스는 상업적으로도 크게 성공한 메탈 밴드이기도 하다. 5장의 앨범은 잇따라 플래티넘을 기록했고 7개의 '최고의 메탈연주'부문 그래미와 함께 총합 2000만 장 이상의 음반 판매량을 세웠다. 메가데스는 자주 메탈리카, 앤스랙스 그리고 슬레이어와 함께 4대 스래시 메탈의 거장으로 불리기도 한다. .... ....

나무랄데 없는 믹싱상태와 통일감있는 연주로 기존의 거친 사운드에서 탈피하여 한층 정돈된 깔끔한 느낌을 주는 Megadeth의 5집음반 Countdown To Extinction 이다. 물론, 전작들에 비하면 사운드의 진행이 여유로워진 모습이라 접근성이 용이해지긴 했지만, 본작이 빌보드 앨범차트 2위까지 올라서는 등 일반 대중들에게까지 파고들며 폭넓은 인기를 누렸다는 것은 놀라운 일이 아닐 수 없다. Ozzy Osbourne, Loudness등의 앨범.....
