메사추세츠 공과대학을 졸업하고 폴라로이드 회사의 연구원으로 활동하던 톰 숄츠가 중심이 되어 1976년에 데뷔 앨범 《Boston》을 공개했다. 이 앨범은 그 해에 무려 1000만 장 이상이 팔리는 경이로운 판매고를 기록하였다. 데뷔 앨범으로 세계적인 명성을 얻은 보스턴은 환상적인 우주를 시원하게 표출하는 구성과 그에 걸맞는 사운드로 보스턴 사운드를 확립했다. 예상 밖의 히트로 보스턴은 두 번째 앨범에 심혈을 기울여 1978년에는 《Don't Look Back》을 공개하였다. 수록곡 중에서 《Don't Look Back》, 《A Man I'll Never Be》 등이 호평을 받았으며, 영국 차트 1위를 차지하며 미국시장에서 300만장이 팔리는 판매고를 올렸다 .... ....
