The Perfect Day
Listening to the bells at dawn in San Miguel
is the perfect prelude to The Perfect Day in this beautiful town.
With my wife and cat beside me,
we listen to the Hummingbird’s vibrating wings
as they hum in unison around the feeder. Paradise Found.
With the light of daybreak and the smell of coffee,
the day is set, and I go to my new keyboard,
full of wonders and new sounds to inspire me.
A perfect day includes finding a new tune,
a series of notes which move me to the point of wanting
to complete the song, which may ultimately take months to do so.
But the beginning of a melody is the important part,
and I immediately reach for the recording button
so I will not forget my initial rush of enthusiasm.
Although I always think I can never forget some melodic phrase
which has excited me, I now know better,
and I record the transporting phrase to be built on later.
Composing music can be like nailing a cloud.
I hear music in my head, so composing is selecting
and then polishing an idea, imagining the instrument
and performer, and completing the journey,
ultimately resulting in a new composition.
And that is a perfect day for me,
ending up with a new song which was not there at the beginning.
Dusk falls, my wife and I gaze at the sinking sun
from our terrace looking across San Miguel.
We feel immensely blessed, and The Perfect Day has drawn
to a close with the evening bells chiming the day’s diminuendo.
