이 5명의 소년들이 원 디렉션을 함께 하게 된 계기는 꽤나 이색적이다.
인기 오디션 프로그램 엑스펙터(X-Factor) 시즌7에서 각각 개인별 오디션에 참가하게 된 이들은 패널인 사이먼 코웰, 니콜 셰르징거에 의해 그룹으로 결성하는 것이 어떠겠냐는 제안을 받게 되고,다섯 소년은 이를 계기로 ‘원 디렉션(One Direction)’이란 그룹을 결성하게 되며, 엑스팩터 파이널 리스트까지 진출하게 된다. 이들은 최종 파이널에서 아쉽게도 최종 3위를 차지했지만, 액스팩터가 끝난 후 결국 팝 계 최고의 영향력 있는 인물인 사이먼 코웰의`Syco Music`과 계약을 체결하면서 정식 데뷔하기에 이르렀다.
