Sunburst. The morning moar. The
light of God. The heart of youth. I look around me. My eyes find their rest on this garden the flower of the west. Sunrise. The colour frontier. The ageing light. The sight that knows no fear. I look over Orinsay to the Trumisgarry shore. To Aloter. And the road to Ahmore. The silent skies. An innocent heart Holding the moment away from time in the dark. All I see. All I know. Is touching the sacred earth warming the hallowed ground. I survive the childhood universe and I step the naked heath where the breathing of the vanished lies in acres round my feet past Loch Scadavagh Loch Fada and the flatlands to the east where the dark blue mass of Eval meets the rising Rock of Lee. Between the Crogary and Mairi I started to descend Loch Aongais on my left hand side I look across to Clett. Collies barking on the outrun Dunlin dancing on the sand. Breakers show round Corran Vallique and empty the Atlantic on the strand |

The red hot sun burns up the hill
The winter's bride, the summer's king I tramp these acres and I feel Once upon a time Then it seemed that everything You saw and touched and felt was real You turned the tap and you turned the wheel Breathing free Now you search the open evening sky Trace the memory in your eyes For the prophet's hard rain and the deluge Lie in tears around your door Once there were trees and livestock here A mother's love, the warnings clear But you chose to turn away from fear Breathing free Now there's a faceless cross on a distant hill A wasted voice, a silent scream Where the lovers love and the dreamers dream You stand and dream alone You took your sacrifice to the gods of war Traded your children's lives for a mess of gold And you beat your ploughshares into swords Breathing free Once in a lifetime You live and love Once in a lifetime You die Once in a lifetime The sun goes down Protect and survive |

We listened into the Iceage
And we built up man round the Picts And the daybreak hammered out warning To the weak We dreamed on moor with passion And on the long lochs bluer than eyes 'Till the mists of bygone ages heard our cries I've seen us among thousands All of one name waiting to run And when the charge came heather on heartbeat Steel on gun The old rock leaves us with fossil From the ancient pagan rites From the universal inroads back to Christ Transmitting, transmitting Breaking down the wire Transmitting, transmitting Breaking down the wire As we look out over the morning And the days of this life's spring And the joy of Gaelic's lifeblood Made me sing Watching your beauty on this journey With the lick of youth in your eyes Let us sow this olden heartland Reap in time Transmitting, transmitting Breaking down the wire Transmitting, transmitting Breaking down the wire |

Sons and daughters of the dust
Strangers of time and place For a while your limbs entwine Holy marriage of flesh But I know your ways Your ways are not mortal thought Till the day breaks and shadows run Run away So shine on harvest moon Cast your might on the ripening corn And I look at your life Hold you in my arms With all the power in the days of youth In the fullness of love Fields run deep in golden swards Hot summer winds blow through the corn Cast off your sorrows now you stand In the presence of Lord Your radiance shines Like the moon of all innocent grace To know that we dared breathe belief To love again (Chorus) (Chorus) |

You ask me to believe in magic
Expect me to commit suicide of the heart And you ask me to play this game without question Raising the stakes on this shotgun roulette But you came to me like the ways of children Simple as breathing, easy as air Now the years hold no fears, like the wind they pass over Loved, forgiven, washed, saved Every river I try to cross Every hill I try to climb Every ocean I try to swim Every road I try to find All the ways of my life I'd rather be with you There's no way Without you |

The landlords came
The peasant trials To sacrifice of men Through the past and that quite darkly The presence once again In the name of capital Establishment Improvers, its a name The hidden truths The hidden lies That once nailed you To the pain They did a dance Called America They danced it round And waited at the turns For America They danced their ladies round To the candles Of enlightenment Once lit they say don't burn To turn the darkest room of suffering To a greater state of pain Don't tell me that's behind you now Don't greet me Don't meet your dying blind It's our very last stand together So let's sever No regrets They did a dance Called America They danced it round And waited at the turns For America They danced their ladies round There were days That once held confidence Strength of will and mind The camouflage that once washed your fathers Your sons and daughters time Another tounge My love, my island You've gone international With all the praying men of God Who stood And watched it all go on They did a dance Called America They danced it round And waited at the turns For America They danced their ladies round |

Air sgiath a' seoladh nan neoil
'S an domhain liath Mar dhealbh a' tighinn beo tro na sgothan 'S mi a' tilleadh gu tir Alba nam beanntan ard Nan acraichean lom Thairis air na lochan mointich Nan coilltean 's nan gleann Ach 'se sealladh leointe is gann Tha an seo aig ceann thall an linn Talamh alainn nan daoine Fhathast an lamhan duine no dithis Cuibhlean stolda mu dheas Na fasaichean a tuath An taigh-mor falamh an Dun-Eideann Gun chumhachd gun ghuth *Sibhse chuir achadh ri achadh Taigh ri taigh Gus nach bi ait anns an tir An gabh sibh comhnaidh air leth Ach 's math dhomh bhith seo an drasd A cur failt air a' bhlas 'San tir a tha cho ur dhomh an diugh Is a bha i nuair bha mi 'nam phaisd *Bho Isaiah 5-8 Scotland This flight is sailing through the clouds And the blue heavens The homeland appears like a developing photograph Through the mists as I return to land I see Scotland of the high mountains And the empty acres Flying low across the moorland lochs The forests and the glens But it's a wounding and a hollow sight Here as we reach the end of the century The beautiful soil of the people Still in the hands of the few I see the wheels of industry at a standstill And the northern lands wasted And the empty house in Edinburgh Without authority or voice You that have laid field upon field House upon house Till there be nowhere for you to be placed alone In the midst of all the earth But it is good for me to be here now As I welcome the warmth In this land that's as exciting for me today As it was the day I was born |

Watching the morning come in on the land
See the moon roll over Skeabost See the young men late in the glen All with camans in hand. Sea winds out on the wild Sea waves crash onto Uig See the black homes strung out in a line Cross the island of Skye. I can't believe That it's taking all this time, I can't believe My life and my destiny After the clans, after the clearings, Here I am Recovering. Should have been home before daylight, It's not easy when you're down and hungry One from the late run rolled up in a coat I make my way across the moor. For a late summer in '84 But now there's a new day dawning I've heard the Braes men talk in Portree The news from Glendale. And I can't believe That it's taking all this time I can't believe My life and my destiny After the clans, after the clearings Here I am Recovering. Still the morning comes in on the land See the new sun red and rising See the corn turn ripe in the fields See the growth in the glen. And MacPherson's in Kilmuir tonight What a night for a people rising And oh God not before time There's justice in our lives. |

How can't you see
The wilderness growing free Time wounded and scarred Stroking away the years It's hard to believe But memories are old ghosts Mountains of black and gold Sunsets falling over the moor Oh take me there! 'S na horo eile, horo bho 'S na horo bho, hillean o 'S na horo eille ho Take me there! You take your dream You make life what you feel Appearances lead to deceive This drama so far from me Destiny On facts aching wings Wild geese fly low over your shores Hearts sailing over the trees Oh take me there! 'S na horo eile, horo bho 'S na horo bho, hillean o 'S na horo eille ho Take me there! Chi mi'n t-eilean uaine Tir nam beanntann arda Ceo a'tuiteam tron a'ghleann Na shineadh air do raointeann |

By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond Where me and my true love spent many happy days On the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. T'was there that we parted in yon shady glen On the steep sides of Ben Lomond Where in purple hue the Highland hills we view And the moon glints out in the gloaming. You'll take the high road and I'll take the low road And I'll be in Scotland afore ye Where me and my true love will never meet again On the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. Where wild flowers spring and the wee birdies sing On the steep steep side of Ben Lomond But the broken heart it kens nae second spring Though resigned we may be while we're greetin'. You'll take the high road and I'll take the low road And I'll be in Scotland afore ye Where me and my true love will never meet again On the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. You'll take the high road and I'll take the low road And I'll be in Scotland afore ye Where me and my true love will never meet again On the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. On the bonnie bonnie banks |
