INTRODUCTION
Trouble Over Tokyo는 영국 남동부 출신의 다재다능한 20대 뮤지션 Toph (Christopher M Taylor)의 또 다른 자아의 한 모습이다. 1979년 영국 남동부의 조용한 지역에서 태어나 그곳에서 성장한 그는 불과 5살의 나이에 처음으로 곡을 썼을 만큼 음악적으로 명민한 두뇌와 재능을 지니고 있었고, 그런 그에게 기타를 연주하고 노래 를 하는 것은 어릴 때부터 너무나도 자연스러운, 그리고 가장 즐거운 놀이였다고 한다.
16세 이후 많은 밴드를 거치면서 음악적인 경험을 축적하던 그는, 결국 그 어느 밴드에서도 자신이 원하는 만큼의 창조적인 상상력이나, 감성을 충족 받지 못했다. 그때까지의 음악적인 경험에서 결코 얻지 못한 그 나머지 부분들을 충족하기 위해 그가 택한 수단은 바로 D.I.Y.(Do It Yourself)였다. 그렇게 해서 탄생한 원맨밴드가 바로 Trouble Over Tokyo로, 그가 영국인이라는 것을 고려하면 실로 특이한 이름이 아닐 수 없다. 어쨌든 Troble Over Tokyo란 이름으로 2006년에 1,000장 한정 발매한 첫 셀프 프로듀싱 앨범 ≪ 1.000 ≫은 뷰욕과 톰 요크(라디오헤드), 마이클 잭슨의 블렌딩이라는 평을 받을 정도로 복합적인 스타일을 보여주면서 매니아들의 관심을 끌게 된다.
2008년, Klein 레코드를 통해 본 작 ≪ Pyramides ≫를 발매한 그는 이 앨범에서도 자신의 다재다능함을 한껏 선보인다. 작/편곡자인 동시에 프로듀서이며 연주자로서, 피아노, 드럼머신, 스트링 등을 모두 직접 연주했고, 더욱이 앨범의 모든 아트?p 역시 직접 해냈다. 그는 자신의 음악을 Indie Electronica Angst Pop이라고 정의하는데, 뭔가 거창하게 들리지만 앨범의 내용물을 들어보면 일렉트로니카/팝/록 등이 복합적으로 뒤섞인 댄서블한 성향의 팝음악들을 담고 있다. 특히 타이틀곡 ‘The Liar’나 ‘My Anxiety’, ‘No Handed (Part 3)’와 같은 트랙들은 최근 비트메이커 Timbaland(팀바랜드)와 함께 작업하며 팝씬의 수퍼-아이콘으로 부상한 Justin Timberlake(저스틴 팀버레이크)의 음악을 연상케 한다. 선율이 아름다운 ‘Eyes Off Me’나 ‘The Dark Below (Oh...My God)’ 등의 발라드 트랙들도 귀에 편안하게 감겨온다.
