On a warm summer's evenin'
On a train bound for nowhere I met up with the gambler We were both too tired to sleep So we took turns a-starin' Out the window at the darkness When boredom overtook us He began to speak He said, "Son, I've made my life Out of readin' people's faces Knowin' what the cards were By the way they held their eyes So if you don't mind my sayin' I can see you're out of aces For a taste of your whiskey I'll give you some advice" So I handed him my bottle And he drank down my last swallow Then he bummed a cigarette And asked me for a light And the night got deathly quiet And his face lost all expression He said, "If You're gonna play the game, boy You gotta learn to play it right" You've got to know When to hold 'em Know when to fold 'em Know when to walk away Know when to run You never count your money When you're sittin' at the table There'll be time enough for countin' When the dealin's done Now every gambler knows The secret to survivin' Is knowin' what to throw away And knowin' what to keep 'Cause every hand's a winner And every hand's a loser And the best you can hope for Is to die in your sleep" And when he finished speakin' He turned back toward the window Crushed out his cigarette And faded off to sleep And somewhere in the darkness The gambler - he broke even And in his final words I found An ace that I could keep You've got to know When to hold 'em Know when to fold 'em Know when to walk away Know when to run You never count your money When you're sittin' at the table There'll be time enough for countin' When the dealin's done You've got to know When to hold 'em Know when to fold 'em Know when to walk away Know when to run You never count your money When you're sittin' at the table There'll be time enough for countin' When the dealin's done |

I can't remember when you weren't there
When I didn't care for anyone but you I swear we've been through everything there is Can't imagine anything we've missed Can't imagine anything the two of us can't do Through the years, you've never let me down You turned my life around, the sweetest days I've found I've found with you ... through the years I've never been afraid, I've loved the life we've made And I'm so glad I've stayed, right here with you Through the years I can't remember what I used to do Who I trusted, whom I listened to before I swear you've taught me everything I know Can't imagine needing someone so But through the years it seems to me I need you more and more Through the years, through all the good and bad I knew how much we had, I've always been so glad To be with you ... through the years It's better every day, you've kissed my tears away As long as it's okay, I'll stay with you Through the years Through the years, when everything went wrong Together we were strong, I know that I belonged Right here with you ... through the years I never had a doubt, we'd always work things out I've learned what love's about, by loving you Through the years Through the years, you've never let me down You've turned my life around, the sweetest days I've found I've found with you ... through the years It's better everyday, you've kissed my tears away As long as it's okay, I'll stay with you Through the years! |

Lady...
I'm your knight in shining armor and I love you. You have made me what I am and I am yours. My love... There's so many ways I want to say, "I love you." Let me hold you in my arms forever more. You have gone and made me such a fool. I'm so lost in your love. And oh, we belong together. Won't you believe in my song? Lady... For so many years, I thought I'd never find you. You have come into my life and made me whole. Forever, let me wake to see you each and every morning. Let me hear you whisper softly in my ear. In my eyes, I see no one else but you. There's no other love like our love And yes, oh yes I'll always want you near me. I've waited for you for so long. Lady... Your love's the only love I need. and Beside me is where I want you to be. Cause my love there's something I want you to know. You're the love of my life. You're my lady... |

In a bar in Toledo across from the depot
On a bar stool she took off her ring I thought I'd get closer so I walked on over I sat down and asked her name When the drinks finally hit her she said I'm no quitter But I finally quit livin' on dreams I'm hungry for laughter and here ever after I'm after what-ever the other life brings In the mirror I saw him and I closely watched him I thought how he looked out of place He came to the woman who sat there beside me Had a strange look on his face The big hands were calloused he looked like a mountain For a minute I thought I was dead But he started shaking his big heart was breaking He turned to the woman and said You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille With four hungry children and a crop in the field I've had some bad times lived through some sad times But this time your hurting won't heal You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille After he left us I ordered more whisky I thought how she'd made him look small From the lights of the bar room to a rented hotel room We walked without talking at all She was a beauty but when she came to me She must have thought I'd lost my mind I couldn't hold her 'cos the words that he told her Kept coming back time after time You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille .... |

Evryone considered him the coward of the county.
Hed never stood one single time to prove the county wrong. His mama named him tommy, the folks just called him yellow, But something always told me they were reading tommy wrong. He was only ten years old when his daddy died in prison. I looked after tommy cause he was my brothers son. I still recall the final words my brother said to tommy: Son, my life is over, but yours is just begun. Promise me, son, not to do the things Ive done. Walk away from trouble if you can. It wont mean youre weak if you turn the other cheek. I hope youre old enough to understand: Son, you dont have to fight to be a man. Theres someone for evryone and tommys love was becky. In her arms he didnt have to prove he was a man. One day while he was workin the gatlin boys came callin. They took turns at becky.... there was three of them! Tommy opened up the door and saw his becky cryin. The torn dress, the shattered look was more than he could stand. He reached above the fireplace and took down his daddys picture. As his tears fell on his daddys face, he heard these words again: Promise me, son, not to do the things Ive done. Walk away from trouble if you can. It wont mean youre weak if you turn the other cheek. I hope youre old enough to understand: Son, you dont have to fight to be a man. The gatlin boys just laughed at him when he walked into the barroom. One of them got up and met him halfway cross the floor. When tommy turned around they said, hey look! ol yellows leavin. But you coulda heard a pin drop when tommy stopped and blocked the door. Twenty years of crawlin was bottled up inside him. He wasnt holdin nothin back; he let em have it all. When tommy left the barroom not a gatlin boy was standin. He said, this ones for becky, as he watched the last one fall. And I heard him say, I promised you, dad, not to do the things you done. I walk away from trouble when I can. Now please dont think Im weak, I didnt turn the other cheek, And papa, I sure hope you understand: Sometimes you gotta fight when youre a man. Evryone considered him the coward of the county. |

I don't need you
I don't need friendship I don't need flowers in the spring I don't need you And you surely don't need me I don't need love and affection I don't peace and harmony I don't need you And you surely don't need me But we both want it bad enough Yes, we both want it, don't we? I don't need you baby And I know you don't need me I don't need your loving arms around me All I need is to be free That's what I keep telling myself And I tell you, you don't need me I don't need children in my old age No more cluttered leaves around the tree And I don't need you baby And I know you don't need me But we both want it bad enough Yes, we both want it, don't we? I don't need you baby And I know you don't need me And we don't need each other, baby We don't need each other, baby Or do we? |

I know it's late
I know you're weary I know your plans don't include me Still here we are Both of us lonely Longing for shelter from all that we see Why should we worry? No one will care, girl Look at the stars now, so far away We've got tonight Who needs tomorrow? We've got tonight, babe, why don't you stay? Deep in my soul I've been so lonely All of my hopes now so fading away I've longed for love Like everyone else does I know I'll keep searching after today So there it is, girl We've got it all now And here we are, babe What do you say? We've got tonight Who needs tomorrow? We've got tonight, babe, why don't we stay? I know it's late and I know you're weary I know your plans don't include me Still here we are Both of us lonely , both of us lonely We've got tonight Who needs tomorrow? Let's make it last Let's find a way Turn out the light, come take my hand now We've got tonight, babe, why don't we stay? We've got tonight, babe, why don't we stay? |

[Kenny Rogers]
Baby when I met you, there was peace unknown I set out to get you with a fine toothed comb I was soft inside, there was something going on [Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton] You do something to me, that I can't explain Hold me closer, and I feel no pain Every beat of my heart, we got something goin' on [Kenny Rogers] Tender love is blind, it requires a dedication [Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton] Honest love, we feel, needs no conversation And we ride it together, uh huh Making love with each other, uh huh Islands in the stream, that is what we are No one in between, how can we be wrong Sail away with me, to another world And we rely on each other, uh huh From one lover to another, uh huh [Dolly Parton] I can't live without you if the love was gone Everything is nothin' if you got no one And you just walk in the the night Slowly losing sight of the real thing [Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton] But that won't happen to us, and we got no doubt Too deep in love, and we got no way out And the message is clear This could be the year for the real thing [Dolly Parton] No more will you cry Baby I will hurt you never [Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton] We start and end as one In love forever We can ride it together, uh huh Makin' love with each other, uh huh Islands in the stream, that is what we are No one in between, how can we be wrong Sail away with me, to another world And we rely on each other, uh huh From one lover to another, uh huh [Kenny Rogers] (Sail away) [Dolly Parton] (Ohhh, sail away with me) [Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton] Islands in the stream, that is what we are No one in between, how can we be wrong Sail away with me, to another world And we rely on each other, uh huh From one lover to another, uh huh Islands in the stream, that is what we are No one in between, how can we be wrong Sail away with me, to another world And we rely on each other, uh huh From one lover to another, uh huh |

While she lays sleeping, I stay out late at night and play my songs
And sometimes all the nights can be so long And it's good when I finally make it home, all alone While she lays dreaming, I try to get undressed without the light And quietly she says how was your night? And I come to her and say, it was all right, and I hold her tight And she believes in me, I'll never know just what she sees in me I told her someday if she was my girl, I could change the world With my little songs, I was wrong But she has faith in me, and so I go on trying faithfully And who knows maybe on some special night, if my song is right I will find a way, find a way... While she lays waiting, I stumble to the kitchen for a bite Then I see my old guitar in the night Just waiting for me like a secret friend, and there's no end While she lays crying, I fumble with a melody or two And I'm torn between the things that I should do And she says to wake her up when I am through, God her love is true... And she believes in me, I'll never know just what she sees in me I told her someday if she was my girl, I could change the world With my little songs, I was wrong But she has faith in me, and so I go on trying faithfully And who knows maybe on some special night, if my song is right I will find a way, while she waits... while she waits for me for me! |

You want things your way
And I want them mine And now we don't know Just where to draw the line How long can love survive If we keep choosing sides And who picks up the pieces Every time two fools collide You lay the blame on me And I, the blame on you But why do we keep finding faults In everything we do And how long can we keep right and wrongs So cut and dry And who picks up the pieces Every time two fools collide We can save our love We still have the time Oh, I know there must be a way But we still haven't tried To keep our hearts from breaking Every time two fools collide |

All my life was a paper once plain, pure and white
Till you moved with your pen changing moods now and then Till the balance was right Then you added some music, every note was in place And anybody could see all the changes in me by the look on my face And you decorated my life, created a world where dreams are a part And you decorated my life by painting your love all over my heart You decorated my life Like a rhyme with no reason in an unfinished song There was no harmony life meant nothin' to me, until you came along And you brought out the colors, what a gentle surprise Now I'm able to see all the things life can be shining soft in your eyes And you decorated my life, created a world where dreams are a part And you decorated my life by painting your love all over my heart You decorated my life |

It's an ill wind that blows no good
And it's a sad heart that won't love like it should Oh, how lonesome you must be, and it's a shame If you don't share your love with me. It's a heartache when love is gone And it can get even worse if it keeps on Blinder than he who won't see, and it's a shame If you don't share your love with me. I can't help it if she is gone You must try to forget, you must live on It's a good thing to love someone But it's bad and even sad when it's not returned. Oh, how lonesome you must be and it's a shame If you don't share your love with me And I said it's a shame If you don't share your love with me... |

Sometimes when I'm down and alone
I feel just like a child with out a home The love you give me keeps me hangin' on, honey All I ever need is you. Your my first love, your my last Your my future, your my past Ohhh loving you is all I ask, honey All I ever need is you. Winters come and then they go And we watch the melting snow Sure summer follows spring, all the things you do Give me a reason to build my world around you. (World around you) Some men follow rainbows I am told Some men search for silver, some for gold But I found my treasures in my soul And all I ever need is you. Without love I'd never find the way Through ups and downs of every single day And I won't sleep at night until you say Honey, all I ever need is you. La, La, La, La, La, La The love you give me keeps me hangin' on Honey, all I'll ever need is you. La, La, La, La, La, La But I found my treasures in my soul Honey, and all I ever need is you. La, La, La, La, La, La... |

He works hard to give her all he thinks she wants
Three car garage, her own credit cards He pulls in late to wake her up with a kiss goodnight If he could only read her mind She'd say: Buy me a rose Call me from work Open a door for me what would it hurt Show me you love me by the look in your eyes These are the litte things I need the most of my life Now the days have grown to years of feeling all alone She can't help but wonder what she's doing wrong Lately she'd try anything to turn his head Would it make a difference if she'd say: Buy me a rose Call me from work Open the door for me what would it hurt Show me you love me by the look in your eyes These are the litte things I need the most in my life And the more that he lives The less that he tries To show her the love that he holds inside And the more that she gives The more that he sees This is the story of you and me So I bought you a rose On the way home from work to open the door to a heart that i hurt And I hoped you noticed this look in my eyes cause im gonna make things right For the rest of your life(rest of your life) And I'm gonna hold you tonight do all those little things for the rest of your life. |

And he'll tell her he's working late again
But she knows too well there's something going on She's been neglected, and she needs a friend So her trembling fingers dial the telephone Lord, it hurts her doing this again He's the best friend that her husband ever knew When she's lonely, he's more than just a friend He's the one she longs to give her body to Daytime friends and nighttime lovers Hoping no one else discovers Where they go, what they do, in their secret hideaway Daytime friends and nighttime lovers They don't want to hurt the others So they love in the nighttime And shake hands in the light of day When it's over, there's no peace of mind Just a longing for the way things should have been And she wonders why some men never find That a woman needs a lover and a friend Daytime friends and nighttime lovers Hoping no one else discovers Where they go, what they do, in their secret hideaway Daytime friends and nighttime lovers They don't want to hurt the others So they love in the nighttime And shake hands in the light of day Daytime friends and nighttime lovers Hoping no one else discovers Where they go, what they do, in their secret hideaway Daytime friends and nighttime lovers They don't want to hurt the others So they love in the nighttime And shake hands in the light of day Daytime friends and nighttime lovers Hoping no one else discovers Where they go, what they do, in their secret hideaway Daytime friends and nighttime lovers They don't want to hurt the others So they love in the nighttime And shake hands in the light of day |

It's gonna take more then wakin' to rise me I wake up with this need again But feel the love of the woman beside me It's just one of those days When I wanna lay here with her And love her before I leave And listen to the rain fall up on the roof And the thunder sounds like horses hooves Oh, I listen to her breathe And it makes me wanna wake her up And tell her that I'm on fire With morning desire.
