지랄 한 무더기 [Hunk of Shit!]
서브 팝(Sub Pop)을 통해 발매된 충격적 데뷔작 [Cansei De Ser Sexy] 이후 실로 2년 만의 신작이 발표되었다. 홈페이지를 통해 첫 싱글 ’Rat Is Dead(Rage)’의 무료 다운로드 서비스를 시작하며 증폭된 새 앨범에 대한 열기는 2008년 7월 모든 베일을 벗었다.(이미 일본에서는 7월 초에 라이선스 되었다) [Donkey]의 첫 인상은 보다 세련되게 다듬어진 야생마이되, 여전히 불손하고 재미있는 그들의 본성을 지켜냈다는 것이다.
첫 싱글 ’Rat Is Dead (Rage)’는 픽시스(The Pixies) 시절의 얼터너티브를 연상시키고, 두 번째 싱글 ’Left Behind’는 블론디(Blondie), 데비 깁슨(Debbie Gibson)을 연상시키는 80년대 뉴웨이브-팝의 멜로디 훅이 돋보인다. 여러 가지 소스를 찾아간 시도는 ’Give Up’, ’Beautiful Song’, ’How I Became Paranoid’, ’Air Painter’에서 지속적으로 이어지며 데뷔 앨범의 좌충우돌 에너지 사이 존재했던 팝 튠을 세련되게 변모하고 특유의 직선적인 가사를 함께 부각시키는 방향으로 나아갔다. 워킹 타이틀이 [Hunk of Shit]이었다는 사실을 확인하는 순간! 무척이나 CSS다운 이 문구처럼 2집 [Donkey]는 그야말로 자신감과 확신으로 가득 차 있다.
