Maybellene, why can't you be true?
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true? You just started doing the things you used to do As I was motivatin' over the hill I saw Maybellene in a Coup De Ville A Cadillac a-rollin' on the open road Nothin' will outrun my V8 Ford The Cadillac doin' about ninety-five She's bumper to bumper, rollin' side to side Maybellene, why can't you be true? Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true? You've just started back doing the things you used to do The Cadillac pulled up ahead of the Ford The Ford got hot and wouldn't do no more It then got cloudy and it started to rain I tooted my horn for a passin' lane The rain water blowin' all under my hood I knew that was doin' my motor good Maybellene, why can't you be true? Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true? You've started back doing the things you used to do Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true? Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true? You've just started back doing the things you used to do The motor cooled down, the heat went down And that's when I heard that highway sound The Cadillac a-sittin' like a ton of lead A hundred and ten, a half a mile ahead The Cadillac lookin' like it's sittin' still And I caught Maybellene at the top of the hill Maybellene, why can't you be true? Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true? You've started back doing the things you used to do |

Up in the mornin' and out to school
The teacher is teachin' the Golden Rule American history and practical math You studyin' hard and hopin' to pass Workin' your fingers right down to the bone And the guy behind you won't leave you alone Ring, ring goes the bell The cook in the lunch room's ready to sell You're lucky if you can find a seat You're fortunate if you have time to eat Back in the classroom, open your books Keep up the teacher don't know how mean she looks Soon as three o'clock rolls around You finally lay your burden down Close up your books, get out of your seat Down the halls and into the street Up to the corner and 'round the bend Right to the juke joint, you go in Drop the coin right into the slot You're gotta hear somethin' that's really hot With the one you love, you're makin' romance All day long you been wantin' to dance, Feeling the music from head to toe Round and round and round we go Hail, hail rock and roll Deliver me from the days of old Long live rock and roll The beat of the drums, loud and bold Rock, rock, rock and roll The feelin' is there, body and soul. |

Oh well, oh well, I feel so good today,
We just touched ground on an international runway Jet propelled back home from overseas to the USA New York, Los Angeles, oh how I yearned for you Detroit, Chicago, Chattanooga, Baton Rouge Let alone just to be at my home back in ol' St-Lou. Did I miss the skyscrapers? Did I miss the long freeway? From the coast of California to the shores of Delaware Bay You can bet your life I did, 'til I got back to the USA Looking hard for a drive-in, searching for a corner cafe? Where hamburgers sizzle on an open grill night and day Yeah, and a jukebox jumping with records like in the USA Well, I'm so glad I'm livin' in the USA Yes, I'm so glad I'm livin' in the USA Anything you want, they got it right here in the USA I'm so glad I'm livin' in the USA Yes, I'm so glad I'm livin' in the USA |

I got lumps in my throat
When I saw her comin' down the aisle I got the wiggles in my knees When she looked at me and sweetly smiled There she is again Standin' over by the record machine Lookin' like a model On the cover of a magazine She's too cute To be a minute over seventeen Meanwhile I was thinkin' She's in the mood No need to break it I got a chance, I oughta take it If she'll dance we can make it C'mon queenie let's shake it Go, go, go, little queenie Go, go, go, little queenie Go, go, go, little queenie Tell me who's the queen standin' over by the record machine Lookin?like a model On the cover of a magazine She's too cute To be a minute over seventeen Meanwhile, I was still thinkin' If it's a slow song We'll admit it If it's a rocker, then we'll get it If it's good, she'll admit it C'mon queenie, let's get with it Go, go, go, little queenie Go go, go, go, little queenie Go go, go, go, little queenie? |

I left my home in Norfolk, Virginia
California on my mind I straddled that Greyhound and rode him into Raleigh And on across Caroline We stopped in Charlotte, we bypassed Rock Hill We never was a minute late We was 90 miles out of Atlanta by sundown Rollin' out of Georgia state We had motor trouble that turned into a struggle Halfway across Alabam' And that 'hound broke down and left us all stranded In downtown Birmingham Right away I bought me a through train ticket Ridin' 'cross Mississippi clean And I was on that midnight flyer out of Birmingham Smokin' into New Orleans Somebody help me get out of Louisiana Just help me get to Houston town There are people there who care a little about me And they won't let the poor boy down Sure as you're born, they bought me a silk suit And put luggage in my hands And I woke up high over Albuquerque On a jet to the promised land Workin' on a T-bone steak a la carte Flying over to the Golden State When the pilot told us in 13 minutes He would set us at the terminal gate Swing low, chariot, come down easy Taxi to the terminal zone Cut your engines and cool your wings And let me make it to the telephone Los Angeles, give me Norfolk, Virginia Tidewater 4-1009 Tell the folks back home this is the promised land callin' And the poor boy's on the line |

When I was a little bitty boy
My grandmother bought me a cute little toy Silver bells hanging on a string She told me it was my ding-a-ling-a-ling oh (chorus 2x) My ding-a-ling, my ding-a-ling I want you to play with my ding-a-ling Then momma took me to grammer school But I stopped off in the best of youth Everytime that bell would ring Watch me playin with my ding-a-ling-a-ling oh (chorus 2x) Once I was climbing the garden wall I slipped and had a terrible fall I fell so hard I heard bells ring Nut held on to my ding-a-ling-a-ling oh (chorus 2x) Once I was swimmin cross turtle creek Man them snappers all around my feet Sure was hard swimmin cross that thing With both hands holdin my ding-a-ling-a-ling oh (chorus 2x) This little song, it ain't so sad The cutest little song you ever had Those of you who will not sing You must be playin with your own ding-a-ling! (chorus 2x) Your own ding-a-ling your own ding-a-ling We saw you playin with your own ding-a-ling My ding-a-ling everybody sing I wanna play with my ding-a-ling I w-a-n-n-a p-l-a-y w-i-t-h m-y d-i-n-g-a-l-i-n-g!!! |

Ridin' along in my automobile
My baby beside me at the wheel I stole a kiss at the turn of a mile My curiosity runnin' wild Cruisin' and playin' the radio With no particular place to go. Ridin' along in my automobile I'm anxious to tell her the way I feel, So I told her softly and sincere, And she leaned and whispered in my ear Cuddlin' more and drivin' slow, With no particular place to go. No particular place to go, So we parked way out on the Kokomo The night was young and the moon was bold So we both decided to take a stroll Can you imagine the way I felt? I couldn't unfasten her safety belt! Ridin' along in my calaboose Still tryin' to get her belt unloose All the way home I held a grudge, But the safety belt, it wouldn't budge Cruisin' and playin' the radio With no particular place to go. |

It was a teenage wedding, and the old folks wished 'em well
You could see that Pierre did truly love the mademoiselle And now the young monsieur and madame have rung the chapel bell "C'est la vie," say the old folks, "It goes to show you never can tell" They furnished off an apartment with a two room Roebuck sale The coolerator was crammed with TV dinners and ginger ale But when Pierre found work, the little money comin' worked out well "C'est la vie," say the old folks, "It goes to show you never can tell" They had a hi-fi phono, boy, did they let it blast Seven hundred little records, all blues, rock, rhythm and jazz But when the sun went down, the rapid tempo of the music fell "C'est la vie," say the old folks, "It goes to show you never can tell" They bought a souped up jitney, was a cherry red '53 Drove it down to New Orleans to celebrate their anniversary It was there that Pierre was wedded to the lovely mademoiselle "C'est la vie," say the old folks, "It goes to show you never can tell" They had a teenage wedding, and the old folks wished them well You could see that Pierre did truly love the mademoiselle And now the young monsieur and madame have rung the chapel bell "C'est la vie," say the old folks, "It goes to show you never can tell" |

I got on a city bus and found a vacant seat, I thought I saw my future bride walking up the street, I shouted to the driver hey conductor, you must slow down. I think I see her please let me off this bus Nadine, honey is that you? Oh, Nadine. Honey, is that you? Seems like every time I see you Darling you got something else to do [Alternate verse: Seems like every time I catch you, datcha you're up to something new] I saw her from the corner when she turned and doubled back And started walkin' toward a coffee colored cadillac I was pushin' through the crowd to get to where she's at And I was campaign shouting like a southern diplomat Downtown searching for her, looking all around. Saw her getting in a yellow cab heading up town. I caught a loaded taxi, paid up everybody's tab. With a twenty dollar bill, told him 'catch that yellow cab.' She move around like a wave of summer breeze, go, driver, go, go, catch her balmy breeze. Moving thru the traffic like a mounted cavalier. Leaning out the taxi window trying to make her hear. |

Oh Carol, don't let him steal your heart away
I'm gonna learn to dance if it takes me all night and day Climb into my machine so we can cruise on out I know a swingin' little joint where we can jump and shout It's not too far back off the highway, not so long a ride You park your car out in the open, you can walk inside A little cutie takes your hat and you can thank her, ma'am Every time you make the scene you find the joint is jammed Oh Carol, don't let him steal your heart away I'm gonna learn to dance if it takes me all night and day And if you wanna hear some music like the boys are playin' Hold tight, pat your foot, don't let 'em carry it away Don't let the heat overcome you when they play so loud Oh, don't the music intrigue you when they get a crowd You can't dance, I know you wish you could I got my eyes on you baby, 'cause you dance so good Oh Carol, don't let him steal your heart away I'm gonna learn to dance if it takes me all night and day Don't let him steal your heart away I've got to learn to dance if it takes you all night and day Oh Carol |
